The Month of the Rose, What to Know About this Beautiful Flower

june birthday rosesThe flower for June is the lovely rose.  Roses come in more than 100 species and reign among the most beloved flowers in the world.  Throughout history, they have signified beauty and love.  Coveted, not only their exquisite beauty, but also for their intoxicating fragrances, rose oil is used in some of the most expensive and exotic perfumes manufactured.

Roses are traditionally sent to loved ones to commemorate joyful and romantic occasions, and also to honor lives that have passed. They come in many different colors and look lovely either in arrangements by themselves, or mixed with other flowers, such as this stunning arrangement of roses for a loved one’s birthday, “Pearl Jam

When buying a rose floral arrangement, it is best to look for blooms that have not fully opened so they can unfurl their glorious blossoms in their new environment. There are numerous ways in which to preserve the life of fresh roses.  One should never cut the stems straight across at the bottom.  If the stems are pruned as much as ¾”,  at a 45 degree angle, they will absorb water and stay fresher longer.  If a rose begins to wilt prematurely, it can be re-cut under a stream of running water to revive it.

Most florists provide preservative packets with their flower arrangements.  These should be emptied into water and dissolved thoroughly prior to placing roses into the vase.  A homemade preservative can be created by combining 1 teaspoon of liquid bleach or vinegar, 1 teaspoon of sugar and 2 teaspoons of citrus juice in 2 quarts of tepid water.  This mixture should be poured into a vase that is partially filled with fresh water and stirred.

Never place roses in cold water, as this can cause them to go into shock and die.  Tepid is always best. The water should be changed every 3 or 4 days, with fresh preservative added each time.  The flowers do very well in cool rooms and should be kept out of direct sunlight and away from heating or air conditioning vents and fans.

With just a little tender loving care, one’s exquisite rose floral arrangement can make every day in June an extra special day.
