The tradition of the birthstone is believed to have originated in ancient Jewish culture, as twelve colorful stones were used on the breastplate of the biblical priests. In Egypt, stones were thought to have mystical powers, and many of the ruling class would own one of each gem to wear during the appropriate month. While the list of birthstones has been modified over the year, the modern list has remained basically constant for the last 100 years.
