From our earliest days at school, we learn of famous people who helped to shape the story of our nation and the world. Here in America there are many phenomenal and strong women who have influenced the very course of our history. We honor females such as Rosa Parks and Maya Angelou for their impacts on changing cultural norms; Frances Perkins for being the first woman to serve in a presidential cabinet as FDR’s Secretary of Labor, and Sally Ride as the first woman to travel to space. However, many nations do not have the same story of influence as we have in the U.S.; a fact which drives activists each day to make a significant change in the world.
Supporters of women’s rights are making an impact with the recognition of International Women’s Day on March 8th . The day is meant to help promote the rights, freedoms and safety of women worldwide. Although observed in some manner since the early 1900’s, since 1977 the United Nations has spearheaded the global campaign and brought credibility to the cause.
